Last weekend — starting on Friday, actually — we got just over a foot of snow. That was enough to make for plenty of outdoor activity, yet not so much as to keep us truly snowbound at home. On Saturday after lunch, Julie headed down to the end of our street with our kids and some of the neighbors for some sliding fun. Can you spot our kids amongst the dots of color?

That’s Carson up at the top with the green saucer, Benton over to the right with the blue saucer and orange coat, and Alana at the bottom left with her face hidden behind a yellow sled. Also in the picture are Malachi (top center), his brother, Ezra (en route down the slope and obscured by the flying snow), Austin and Austin (the two boys in gray coats), and Caroline (foreground). You can check out the full set (31 pictures) in the Flickr set. Here are just a few Wilson-centric pictures from the day.

We headed to West Virginia for the weekend and were surprised when it snowed for most of the day on Saturday. Pleasantly surprised! The boys barely waited until the ground was covered before heading out to slide down the hill, despite the 12-degree weather.

Julie got the idea to give Molly a ride down the hill. Never one to turn down affection, Molly trotted right over to Julie when she called her…while seated on a blue collapsible sled. A tight grip, some nudging with Julie’s feet, and they were off!

Julie’s description: “She squirmed the whole time!” (ya’ THINK?!)

The experience had Molly fired up for a bit, shown here racing around several minutes after the ride.

Observing Molly over the remainder of the weekend, the experience clearly (re-)cemented Julie’s status as “alpha” in the Wilson pack — she stayed close to Julie for the rest of the trip!

More pictures to come!

Last Friday was the first snow day of the year (and of the school year). Two of Benton’s best friends, Josh and Jack, came over in the afternoon and then spent the night (and then spent all day Saturday at our house and out sledding with Julie). On Friday afternoon, the three boys…and Alana…spent several hours in our yard/driveway making snow forts (Carson also had a friend over, but they opted for indoor activity).

Benton tried out the fort while the rest of the crew admired their handiwork:

The boys helped Alana make a fort of her own. We’re still not sure if it was the fun of playing in the snow or her long-standing crush on Josh (“Joshie!!!”) that kept her outside so long:

So, maybe I am too busy trying to work on figuring out the fabric, pillow sizes and cushion on the new window seat, or maybe it is from trying to figure out Christmas lists, or maybe it is from trying to catch up on having been on a trip to Denver, but in any case, I am, apparently, completely oblivious to the weather report.

I got out of bed this morning and opened the shades to find a white, wintry looking scene. I know it has been cold, but it was a total surprise. So, here you have the first snowfall for us in 2008. Not much snow, but I do think it might be enough to have slowed Tim down on his departure for work this morning.

I am guessing the kids will be equally surprised since Benton is still asking me if he can wear short-sleeved shirts, in anticipation that it will be 60 degrees during the day. (He finally stopped asking about wearing shorts to school a few weeks ago, though he would probably like it if I let him, short of 20 degree temperatures.)

Enjoy the snow if you are in it. And for those of you south of this type of weather, enjoy the thought that you won’t have to scrape the car.
